STRYKERS MISFITS by CHUCK TYRELL

Matthew Stryker is a survivor. As a cadet at Virginia Military Institute, he survived the battle at New Market. As a prisoner in the infamous Yankee prison at Anton, he survived. Given an opportunity to "galvanise", he joined the Army of the Frontier. By 1867 he was a sergeant in A Troop, 5th Infantry, at Fort Cummings, and when his troop was set upon by warriors under the Apache chief Yuyutsu in Cookes Canyon, New Mexico, he rallied his men and fought them off. The battle earned Stryker a commission and instructions to find good men and build a strike force that could beat the Apaches at their own game. He did, and they did, and in the action earned the name of Stryker's Misfits. Follow along as the Misfits learn to out Apache the Apaches as renegade bands seek to exact vengeance among the White Eyes.

    1: STRYKER'S MISFITS

An Apache renegade named Yuyutsu raided freely across Arizona, New Mexico, and Old Mexico, plundering and killing as he went. But as usual, when the fighting went hard on the Apaches, they simply faded away. When the leadership of Sergeant Matt Stryker came to the attention of General George Washington Hunter, commander in chief of the Army of the Southwest, Hunter ordered Stryker to form a unit that could out Apache the Apaches themselves. Matt found men among the Buffalo Soldiers. He found ex-Confederates. He found Texas cowboys, plus two new Apache scouts, Bly of the White Mountains, and Dahtegte, the warrior woman. Together, they stood up to Yuyutsu, and for a bunch of misfits, they fought pretty damned well.
