Emaciated and exhausted, Ballantine spills out the fragments of his incredible story — the Japanese invaders who stole like ghosts through the Malayan jungle — the British military incompetence which led to the fall of Singapore — the brutality of Ballantine's old enemy, the sadistic secret policeman Mizikawa — the terrors of the jungle where every flickering shadow held the promise of a knife in the back...

NIGHT AND FOG

Nacht und Nebel. Night and Fog! The words carved over the dark entrances of German concentration camps. For everyone who entered there, those words meant an end of all hope.

Few men or women ever tried to escape from these camps, and fewer still succeeded. For most, the only way to freedom lay through the gas chambers and the crematoria. Yet, one man risks all to break into a camp. That man is John Standish, leader of 'The Killers'.

The camp, one hundred and sixty miles south-west of Warsaw, is Auschwitz!

TO WIN AND TO LOSE

In a dawn raid on what was supposed to be a safe house, the Gestapo had caught a band of Polish resistance fighters. Among them was a British spy named Leslie Peters. So far, the Gestapo didn't know how important their prisoner was. But as soon as his true identity was revealed, they would give him up to their most proficient torturers and he would sing like a bird ... placing the lives of all the S.O.E. operatives in the country at risk.

So John Standish was ordered to rescue Peters ... or elminiate him. If possible, Standish's boss, Tristram Bowditch, wanted the spy back in one piece. They were, after all, old school chums. But when they finally met, Standish realised there was something about the man that he just couldn't trust. Was he everything he claimed to be? Or could he just possibly be a double agent who had sold his own country out to the enemy?
