A lawman arrives and takes control of the situation only to take Chance to the hellhole of Beltin where they'll hang Chance legal like for the lawman too believes Chance is the outlaw who emptied the bank.

Soon Chance finds himself trapped in Beltin as the real robbers clan arrive with the intention of wiping Beltin, and everyone in it, off the map!

There aren't many turns of the cards that can surprise a riverboat gambler, but when the Montana law wants the Wild Card to ferry a murderer downriver for a meeting with the hangman, Chance Sharpe draws the one hand he never expected.

The accused killer is none other than his former guardian and mentor, Hoyt Bishop!

But Bishop is innocent, victim of a conspiracy of cutthroats. In a desperate race against time, Chance teams up with Bishop's firebrand daughter to piece together the puzzle that will keep his oldest friend off the gallows!

Only a split-second move keeps Chance from getting his head blown off by a mean Texas boy who dropped his family inheritance at the poker table. The rich stockbroker who hosted the game isn't as lucky. But it's Chance who's whisked off to the slammer when he's found bending over the dead broker with a smoking Colt .45 in his hand. For the gambling man, breaking out is his best bet - and with a fast shuffle, he's on his way upriver to settle the score with a killer whose hasty departure has left Chance holding his deadliest hand yet.

Chance gets word of strange doings up on the river by Craddock's Bend. Several boats have disappeared behind mysterious fogs ... ghostly spirits are haunting the riverbanks.

It all seems like a bunch of hogwash to Chance - until his own boat, the Wild Card, falls victim. Chance means to get to the bottom of this phantom foolery ... with an able and willing Cajun spitfire named Karin at his side.

But Chance Sharpe is on to Browder and his cheating ways and soon he's won the New Moon with a trick of his own that leaves Browder boiling for revenge ... and Chance fighting to stay afloat. Along the way he meets up with Marilee, a luscious blonde who wants to down Chance ... any way she can get him!
