Montana's Golden Gamble

Montana Abbott had seen too much blood-running in his day to tangle with any more trouble. He'd been a hard-fighting soldier in the Civil War, and when his side had lost, he'd stood up against the lawless with the strength of a one-man army. Now he was looking for a plot of land, and some time for peace and quiet.

But assassination from ambush was not something he could look away from. When he saw the blue-steeled barrel of a rifle hiding in the brush, and noticed the approach of the Governor's carriage, he decided to set the situation straight. Stealing up from behind, he grabbed the whiskey-sodden bushwhacker, and sent him reeling.

Now, there's an old Western saying that "the tail dies at sundown" - meaning that no matter when a rattlesnake is killed, it never fully expires until the setting of the sun. And Montana knew that that drunken killer was filled with poisonous vengeance, and that before the day was through, he'd strike again. The man was thirsty for Montana's blood, and wouldn't rest until he'd seen it spilled.
