#4: WHITE APACHE

In the early stages of the encounter, Sunny Bear avoided fighting with blue coated soldiers. Who are my people, he wondered, pistol in hand, as his horse skittered nervously. What should I do with myself?

He knew that he looked like an Apache, and it wouldn't be surprising if somebody tried to kill him. As predicted, a blue coated corporal appeared out of the gun smoke and dust, riding a chestnut gelding. The corporal spotted Sunny Bear, steered toward him, and lowered his pistol for the shot.

Sunny Bear held up both hands. "Don't shoot! I'm a United States Army officer!"

The corporal seemed not to hear, as his horse closed with Sunny Bear. The white Apache was forced to draw his own pistol, as the corporal fired. The bullet went wild, the corporal thumbed back his hammer for another try, now ten feet away.

"God forgive me," whispered Sunny Bear, as he pulled the trigger …

#3: SAVAGE FRONTIER

It happened fast.

One moment Nathanial Barrington was riding beside his old West Point friend Johnny Davidson, listening to Johnny's tale of romantic woe. The next, he saw an arrow sticking out of Johnny's chest.

A second later, Johnny was forgotten. Bedlam had descended upon the detachment of dragoons.

Gunshots volleyed around them, arrows zipped through the air, there were screams of pain and the whinnies of horses. Nathanial saw men hit all around him, and then it felt as if a sledgehammer smacked him on the shoulder. Nearly knocked off his horse, he managed to hold on to the pommel. Blood poured down his left arm, the ground was littered with soldiers, and he nearly panicked, but then his long frontier experience took over.

He was an officer. His job was to get what was left of his command out of this devilish death trap. But never had he faced a job as hard as this … as he sensed that all the Apache wars of the past were nothing compared to the one to come …

#2: WAR EAGLES

The dragoons wore their bandannas over their noses to muffle the noxious odor. Buzzards dived squawking out of the sky, landing behind the next rise. Each soldier sought to strengthen himself for the horror that lay ahead.

Nathanial Barrington rocked back and forth in the saddle as he approached the crest of the hill. He'd seen massacres, mutilations, and rapes, but what he saw went beyond that: The wagons had been burned to the ground and cadavers were everywhere. Nathanial's practiced eyes could surmise where the Apaches had hidden, waiting for the miners. Getting closer, he could see tattered dresses of women—they'd died alongside the men, probably firing rifles.

Yes, Apaches are beautiful pastoral nomads and root gatherers, he told himself, but they're also brutal murderers. Nathanial Barrington had crossed the border into Apache bloodlust...

#1: DESERT HAWKS

The year was 1846, and the great American Southwest was the prize in an epic conflict. The US Army and the army of Mexico met in a battle that would shape the course of history, while the legendary Apache warrior chief Mangas Coloradas looked on, determined to defend his ancestral lands and age-old tribal traditions against either of the invaders or both.

On this bloody battlefield young Lieutenant Nathanial Barrington faced his first great test of manhood as he began a career that would take him to the heart of the conflict sweeping over the West from Texas to New Mexico, and plunge him into passions that would force him to choose between two very different frontier beauties.
